Tombstone of Hector Berlioz in the Montmartre cemetery in Paris

Variants of the name:
Tombe de Berlioz

In the Montmartre cemetery in Paris, there is a granite tombstone of the French composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) with a bronze medallion with a convex image of the deceased's head in profile by Cyprian Godebski. The medallion, about 30 cm in diameter, is part of the musician's former tombstone from 1884, one of the Polish sculptor's best-known creations. The bronze is signed and dated: 'Cyp. Godebski 1884".

The circumstances of the 19th-century realisation are little known. It is likely that to win the commission Godebski used his connections in Parisian artistic circles. However, as Andrzej Pieńkos notes, Godebski made his acquaintance with Berlioz in Halle. The original gravestone consisted of a tomb with a high plinth topped by a lyre with a feather and a radial crown inscribed with Berlioz. The names of Berlioz's musical and literary works were inscribed below.

In 1969, due to the deterioration of the tombstone, the remains of Berlioz and his two wives were moved to plot 7, where they were laid in a new tomb.
