Tomb of Auguste Nélaton in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris

One of the most interesting examples of small-scale architecture realised by Polish émigrés in France during the Second French Empire is the burial chapel of the surgeon and inventor Auguste Nélaton (1807-1873). Located in the 6th quadrant on Avenue Lesseps in the Père-Lachaise cemetery, the structure measures approximately 3 metres high. It is distinguished from other creations in this sector by a cradle-shaped canopy with acroterions and a semi-circular pediment with a marble medallion, 45 cm in diameter, surrounded by an oak wreath and laurel branches, surmounted by a cross. The inside of the medallion is filled with the image of the head of the deceased, shown in profile. The author of the sculptural decoration is the Polish sculptor, a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts, Feliks Grabowski (1817-1889). The realisation was probably created after Nélaton's death in 1873.
