St Michael's Cemetery in Riga

The necropolis consists of the central part - the historic St Michael's cemetery, the northern part of the former Old Believers' cemetery and the eastern part of the former garrison cemetery. The central part can be divided into two: - the old one centred around the chapel, - the new one in the western part of the necropolis. A main alley runs through the middle of the cemetery, extending from the main gate to the chapel and continues past the chapel to the cemetery boundary. It divides the necropolis into two parts north and south. In the new part the terrain is hilly, in the old part it is flat. Both parts are covered with old trees. In the old part on the eastern side (up to the height of the chapel) a nearly symmetrical layout with fields marked out by paths, behind the chapel and in the new part the symmetry of the layout is blurred. Especially the new part on the eastern side has an irregular layout. The layout of the plots in the individual fields is only partly symmetrical the further east one goes, the more illegible it becomes. Old and new burials mixed together. Many historical gravestones are replaced by new ones.
