Biography:

Marceli Gujski (1832-1893), born in Krzywoszyniecce, son of Faustin and Rosa née Okryńska, sculptor, creator of portraits and medallions. He graduated from the gymnasium in Niemirów (1843-1853) and then studied at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1854-1857). He continued his education in Italy, settling for a time in Rome. He collaborated with the Branicki family, for whom he made, among other things, the decoration of the Montrésor castle in Turenia and numerous portraits.

From 1873, he lived in Kraków, where he was for a time an assistant professor at the School of Fine Arts there (1875-1877). He exhibited his works in Paris and Munich, gaining international recognition. His oeuvre, inspired by Italian classicism, includes busts of eminent Poles (Mickiewicz, Słowacki, Lenartowicz, Asnyk), architectural sculptures, tombstones, and religious and symbolic works (including Angel of Death, 1859).

His works can be found in the collections of the National Museums in Kraków, Poznań and Warsaw.
