Restoration work on the Jaworski Chapel in Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv

In July 2023, we began conservation work on the tiny Jaworski Chapel in Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv. The Jaworski (originally Dybusi) chapel was built in 1891 according to a project by an unknown architect. It is a rectangular-shaped building with a gable roof originally covered with glazed ceramic tiles. The walls were made of facing brick and decorated with elements made in plaster techniques: arcaded frieze, corner lisens, massive profiled plinth, cornices under the roof, cornices under the parapets, portal elements.

As shown by the conservation survey, the exterior plaster was made as cement-lime. The decorative floor of the chapel is made of cement tiles, and the sandstone altar mensa has also been preserved.

Work carried out in 2023 as part of the Polonica Institute's strategic programme "Protection of Polish cultural heritage abroad".

The chapel is in poor technical condition. The external walls show loss of brick and plaster decorations. They are very damp. Due to severe damage to the roof, the interior plasterwork and the decorative monochrome are heavily dampened and salted, and in places detached from the substrate. The aim of the conservation work is to arrest the causes of the damage and to restore the chapel to its original aesthetic qualities.

The work will last until 30 September 2024.

The contractor for the work is the company ZKR sp. z o.o. under the direction of Paweł Jędrzejczyk, selected by open tender.

The conservation work will be carried out between 2023 and 2024 as part of the Polonica Institute's strategic programme 'Protecting Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad'.
