Sculptures by Tomasz Oskar Sosnowski at the Holy Steps in Rome

Adjacent to the Basilica of St John Lateran is the papal chapel Sancta Sanctorum. Leading up to it is the Holy Staircase (Scala Santa), brought from Jerusalem by St Helena. The faithful climb the 28 steps on their knees, believing them to be the steps on which Christ was led to meet Pilate. At the foot of the stairs, two sculptures by Thomas Oskar Sosnowski (1810-1886) can be admired: "Christ before Pilate" and "Deposition in the Tomb".
