Graves of the January Uprising insurgents

On 21.05.1863, a battle that was victorious for the Poles took place here between the insurgent group "Albertinsky" ("Albertus"), consisting of 380 men, and a combined Tsarist detachment consisting of 3 infantry rotas and 60 Cossacks under the command of Colonel Półtoracki. In the two-hour battle the Muscovites lost 25 killed and 50 wounded, while the "Albertus" lost 10 killed, 5 wounded and 8 taken prisoner. Lieutenant Bukovsky and former St Petersburg University student Braun distinguished themselves in the skirmish and fell. The graves of the insurgents are located in the forest, 1 km from the village of Ruszyszki. There are two graves - 2 insurgents were buried in one and 11 insurgents in the other. In 1926 the graves were fenced off, and in 1932. The Border Company of the 20th Battalion of the Border Protection Corps placed identical monuments with inscriptions on them: "Here rests / 11-heroes of the insurgents / who in defence of their homeland's freedom / fell in 1863 / 3 Komp. Granicz. 20 Baonu KOP" and "Here lies / 2 insurgent heroes / who in defence of their homeland's freedom / fell in 1863 / 3 Komp. Granicz. 20 Baon KOP". Later, small plaques with inscriptions in Lithuanian were placed above these plaques. Near both graves there are information boards with text in Lithuanian.
