In 1920-1939, a unit of the Border Protection Corps "Orany" was stationed in Marcinkańce. On 11 March 1938, a soldier of this battalion, Cpl Stanisław Serafin, was shot by Lithuanian border policeman Justyn Lukosevičius, and died as a result. This fact became the immediate cause of Poland issuing an ultimatum to the Lithuanian government to establish diplomatic relations, to which Lithuania agreed. Cpl Serafin was buried in the quarters of Polish soldiers killed in the Polish-Bolshevik war. His grave underwent renovation in 1996, financed by the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites. The plaque-medallion at the bottom of the granite cross was not reconstructed at that time, as it was not possible to establish what it represented. The inscription on the monument reads: "Ś+P Stanisław Serafin corporal K.O.P. Baonu "Orany" fell on 11 March 1938 near the watchtower of Wierszeradówka in defence of the borders of the Polish Republic".
