Marian Wacław Bohusz-Szyszko (1901-1995) - Polish Expressionist painter, educator, art critic and publicist. After the Polish-Bolshevik War, he studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius (1921-1923) and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (1923-1927). He later became fascinated by the mathematical sciences. He settled in the Free City of Gdansk, where he painted, wrote and taught at the Polish Gymnasium. His debut exhibition took place in 1934 in Gdansk. In 1933, he married Zofia Glogerowa. After the German invasion of Poland, he joined the Polish Army, but was later taken prisoner and ended up in a POW camp. There he taught courses in drawing and mathematics, and also portrayed fellow prisoners. After the war, he went to Italy, where he joined the Second Polish Corps. After its demobilisation in 1947, he settled in the United Kingdom. There he founded the Polish School of Painting in London, continuing the spirit of the University of Vilnius. He was also active in the life of the Association of Polish Artists in Great Britain. He published articles on painting. Marian Bohusz-Szyszko was a member of the Polish Scientific Society Abroad. In 1963, he met Cicely Saunders and their relationship evolved into a relationship. After the death of his wife, he married Cicely and died in a hospice in London. His work as a painter was eclectic, focusing on colour and in the second half of his life he painted many paintings with sacred themes. He received numerous awards, including from the Alfred Jurzykowski Foundation. His work can be found in churches, chapels and museums, and a significant collection is held at St Christopher's hospice in London.
