Grave of participants in the January Uprising

On 7-9.05.1863, four battles between insurgents and Russian troops took place in the vicinity of Birża. One of the skirmishes took place near Sznurkiszki. Initially the insurgents were successful, but in the following days they succumbed to the overwhelming enemy forces. The final defeat occurred on 9.05.1863, when, having gathered the shattered troops, Ignacy Laskowski took up a position near the manor in Sznurkiszki near Skrobiszki. A few hundred insurgents under the command of the wounded Zygmunt Sierakowski, Ignacy Laskowski and Antoni Mackiewicz were attacked by a column of Russian troops from General Ganecki's grouping numbering about 1,500 men. The battle ended in defeat and the dispersal of the remnants of the insurgent troops. The wounded Sierakowski and several other commanders were taken prisoner. Those killed included Bukowski - son of the owner of an estate in Kukle, Grużewski - son of the owner of an estate in Birżela, Narcyz Lipski - a teacher of physics and mathematics. About 400 insurgents survived the pogrom, who, led by Laskowski and Mackiewicz, retreated towards Panevėžys.
The insurgents who died in battle were buried in a grave located in the forest, 5 km from the manor. It is a mass grave, topped by a magnificent concrete cross. The grave bears an inscription in Lithuanian only: "Garbe karzygiams / kritusiems sukilimo kovose / 1863 V. 5-7 / del Lietuvos laisves". Next to it is an information board in Lithuanian.
