In 2021. The Polonics Institute began restoration work on the oldest and, in artistic terms, one of the most valuable chapels in Lviv's Lychakiv Cemetery. It was built in 1812 in the classicist style with a four-column pediment originally decorated with the coat of arms of the Dunin Borkowski family of counts.

The building was partially destroyed in a fire that occurred in 1985. The renovation carried out a few years later in 1992 caused the chapel's restrained and elegant architectural design to become partially deformed. During the works carried out at that time, the ankle cornice under the beam and the full profile of the tympanum were not restored, and the arrangement of the rustications on the walls of the building was altered.

An archive search (in 2020) failed to identify the author of the chapel design. The front of the chapel was originally decorated with three statues: Chronos, Hymenaeus and a grieving woman (funeral cries), whose authorship was attributed by Tadeusz Mankowski to the Viennese sculptor Hartman Witwer. The Chronos statue was secured inside the chapel after falling from the top of the pediment. The other two sculptures have been preserved in their place.

Despite the state of war in which Ukraine finds itself, work in the chapel is progressing according to schedule.

The vaults of the crypt and the chapel have been reinforced, the concrete screed for the marble floor has been made, the walls have been plastered and prepared for the reconstruction of the missing parts of the polychrome. Work is underway on the reconstruction of the cornice and the original layout and profiles of the rustication on the facades according to a design based on historical photographs.

The reconstruction of the signature tower has already been completed in a workshop in Poland and is awaiting transport to Lviv. Work is underway at the restoration workshop in Lviv to reconstruct the plaster models of the missing fragments of the Chronos, Hymenaeus and Placa sculptures and the marble inscription plaques inside the chapel.

In December 2022, despite the hostilities, the conservation work on the chapel was successfully completed. The polychromes, stone carvings and marble inscription plaques inside the chapel were restored. The original form of the tympanum, rebuilt after a fire in the 1980s, was reconstructed.

Conservation work began in August this year and is expected to be completed by the end of November 2022. It is planned to restore the original architectural and sculptural decoration of the chapel from the first half of the 19th century and to uncover and authenticate the polychrome inside the chapel. The conservation project was prepared in 2020 by arch. Dorota Śliwińska and her team.
