Jan Matejko's painting in the Vatican Museums

The painting 'Jan Sobieski at Vienna', also known as 'Victory at Vienna', was painted by Jan Matejko in 1882-1883 to mark the bicentenary of the battle. The artist gave the painting to Pope Leo XIII as a gift from the Polish nation. The work is displayed in the Sobieski Room. It depicts a scene when King Jan III Sobieski hands a letter to the envoy of Pope Innocent XI with information about the victory over the Turkish army at Vienna.
