Polish War Cemetery Olmazor I

In January/February 1942, the redeployment of the Polish Armed Forces in the USSR (General Anders' Army) from the Soviet Russian republic to the Central Asian republics took place. An Army Training Centre was located in Vrevskaya (now Olmazor). The Centre included, among others, an EOD Training Centre, a cadet school, a school for juniors and a chemical company. A co-educational general school was also established. The military and civilians who died here from exhaustion and disease, and who came to the places where Polish units were formed as a result of the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of 12.08.1941 on the so-called "amnesty for Polish citizens", were buried in at least two cemeteries. The Polish War Cemetery (modern name: Olmazor I) was located on the outskirts of the city. Workers of the Council for the Protection of Remembrance of Struggle and Martyrdom managed to establish 25 names of soldiers and junks who died in the garrison hospital established in Vrevskaya and were buried in this cemetery. The cemetery survived the Soviet era in relatively good condition, although some of the Polish burials were built over with Orthodox graves. An obelisk topped with a semicircle has survived, on which - probably in the 1960s - a plaque was placed with an inscription in Russian, the content of which does not correspond to historical truth ("ZDIES' POCHORONIENY WOINY POLSKOJ ISVOBODITELNOJ ARMII OTDAWSZE ŻIZN' W BORBIE PROTIW FASZIZMA 1942". - soldiers of the Polish liberation army who gave their lives in the fight against fascism in 1942 are buried here). As part of the work carried out by the OPWiM Council in 2001, a central monument - a milepost topped by an eagle bas-relief - characteristic of all the rebuilt cemeteries of General Anders' soldiers was erected. The monument bears the inscription in Polish and Uzbek: "TU SPOCZYWAJĄ POLACY / 25 SOLDIERS / OF THE POLISH ARMY / IN THE EAST/ GEN. WŁ. ANDERS / AND CIVILIANS / FORMER PRISONERS OF WAR / PRISONERS / OF SOVIET GULAGS / WHO DIED IN 1942 / ON THEIR WAY TO THEIR HOMELAND/ HONOUR THEIR MEMORY". The rows of graves were framed and 25 tombstones with a relief cross and name plates were placed on them, the existing commemoration was left in place and subjected to maintenance. The entire area (248 m2) was separated from the Orthodox cemetery by a fence with a gate. At the entrance to the cemetery there are information plaques with texts in Polish and Uzbek, installed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in 2017, which read: "POLISH / WAR CEMETERY / OLMAZOR I / UNDER THE CARE / OF THE / MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND HERITAGE / NATIONAL / HERITAGE / RESTORED IN 2001 / THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF THE COUNCIL FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE MEMORY / OF FIGHTS AND MARTYRDOM". The last renovation of the cemetery was carried out by the OPWiM Council in 2016. After the liquidation of the OPWiM Council, the care of the cemetery is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The Ministry of Culture is also conducting research work to establish a census of civilians buried in cemeteries in Central Asia.
