Mass grave of the January Uprising insurgents

On 21.06.1863, a major battle took place near the village of Staciszki, in which the combined troops of Pawel Suzin and Wiktor Hlaska clashed with the Tsarist army under the command of Colonel Skordula and Captain Stern von Gwiazdowski. The outstanding commander Pavel Suzin and 32 insurgents were killed in the battle, while 30 were wounded. It is estimated that the Russian losses were higher. The fallen insurgents are buried in a mass grave 2km from the battle site. Suzin's body was taken away by his wife; his funeral took place in Serei. On the mass grave of the insurgents, a wooden chapel pillar topped with a cone was set up; the inscription engraved on it reads: "Čia palaidoti 1863 m. sukilimo dalyviai" ("Here rest the January insurgents"). On the trees behind the post hang 3 wooden shrines, and above the central shrine - a wooden cross. Until recently, there was a wooden chapel at the site of the battle. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in the last decade - only a fragment of the wooden post and an information board remain.
