Biography:

Korczak Ziolkowski was born on 6 September 1908 in Boston. Although he never completed any art school he began by carving wood and became a highly regarded maker of fine art furniture. He was offered a position as an assistant in the creation of the Presidents' Heads at Moint Rushmore, where, in the course of the work, he was asked by several Dakota pleniency chiefs to create a statue of Crazy Horse. Ziolkowski moved permanently to the Black Mountains after his volunteer service in the US Army, where he began creating the world's largest sculpture. Korczak had managed to mark the contours of the sculpture depicting Crazy Horse during his lifetime when he suddenly died of a heart attack. He was buried at the foot of the monument, and after his death, his loved ones continued his work.
