A multidisciplinary research, conservation and construction project to restore the Krzyżanowski Chapel in the Lychakiv Cemetery was initiated in 2019.

Maintained in neo-Gothic style, the cemetery chapel of the Krzyżanowskis was built in 1890-1891, on the site of the former Cetner chapel. Its designer was Jan Tomasz Kudelski, and the construction work was carried out by the well-known Lviv firm of Jan Lewiński. The brick chapel with a copper-clad bell tower was commissioned by Stanisław Krzyżanowski to commemorate his mother. The roof is decorated with distinctive chimney-chimeras made of sandstone and stone masonry in the windows glazed with stained glass made by the renowned Tiroler Glasmalerai und Mosaik Anstalt of Innsbruck. The sculptural details are most likely the work of Kudelski's collaborator, Piotr Vitalis Harasimowicz.

Conservation work on the Krzyżanowski Chapel was started by the POLONIKA Institute in 2019, as the building was in a very poor technical condition. The construction and conservation work carried out was complicated due to the technological diversity of the components: brick, stone, metalwork, wall painting, stained glass.

The work carried out in 2020

POLONIKA Institute continued conservation work on the Krzyzanowski Chapel in Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv in 2020. As part of the second stage, work was carried out in parallel on the replacement of deteriorated bricks and the reconstruction of the lanterns and roof pinnacles. In addition, among other things, the roof slope was replaced and plaster and paint layers were reconstructed, a stained-glass window was installed and the stone epitaph plates were restored.

Works carried out in 2019 r.

A considerable amount of construction and conservation work was carried out in 2019. The original material used to cover the roof of the chapel was identified. It was found to be clay tile. This fact was confirmed by the results of an archive search. It was therefore necessary to modify the design within the roof covering. In addition, the following work was carried out: the stone altarpiece was dismantled and restored, the remains of the vault paintings were transferred, the plaster inside the chapel was replaced, the roof and roof truss were dismantled, a new roof truss and additions to the stone detail were made, the inscription plaques and metalwork were cleaned, custom-made bricks and a suitable tile for the chapel roof were paid for.

The conservation work was carried out in 2019-2020 within the framework of the Polonica Institute's strategic programme "Protection of Polish cultural heritage abroad".
