Biography:

Jerzy Gawenda (1917-2000), born in Lwów, son of Bolesław Włodzimierz, a civil servant. Between 1935 and 1939, he studied law at Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov. During World War II, he fought in France in the 2nd Infantry Rifle Division, and then was interned in Switzerland, where he earned his doctorate in law at the Freiburg University branch. After the war, he left for the United Kingdom. There, from 1951, he joined the Polish University Abroad and, from 1960, the Polish Scientific Society Abroad, where he was Rector from 1978 to 1987. He was Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the Polish Government in Exile several times between 1968 and 1970, and a member of the Polish National Council between 1954 and 1970. He was a member of the Union of Polish Socialists Abroad. In 1973 he was awarded the title of full professor.
