Biography:

August Zaleski (1883-1972) completed his studies at the London School of Economics. After the outbreak of the Second War, he was sent to London to promote the idea of an independent Poland. This was within the delegation of the Bloc of Independence Parties. In 1917, two years after arriving in London as a delegate, he took up a job at the University of London as a lecturer in Polish literature and language. Between the wars, he was occupied with the diplomatic service, and was chargé d'affaires in Bern. He was Polish MP successively in Athens and Rome. In 1932, he left the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and took up a job at Bank Handlowy in Warsaw. After the outbreak of WWII, he went to Romania and then reached France, where he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of General Władysław Sikorski. After the Sikorski-Mayski Agreement, he resigned in a show of defiance. In 1947, he became President of the Republic of Poland in exile.
