Grave of Klemens Konstanty Gucwa, pseud. "Góral", ZWZ courier

Klemens Konstanty Gucwa a.k.a. "Góral" was born on 23.12.1909 in Nowy Sącz into a railway family. In 1932, as an NCO in the rank of Corporal, he started his professional service in the 1st Regiment of Highland Riflemen in Nowy Sącz, then he served in the 82nd Tadeusz Kosciuszko Siberian Infantry Regiment in Brest-on-the-Bug. On September 1, 1939, by order of the commander of the 60th Infantry Division, Colonel Adam Epler, he was appointed to the rank of second lieutenant in the infantry officer corps. As an officer of the battalion's infantry batteries, he fought in the defence of the Brest Fortress in the days 14-17 September 1939, and was wounded in the legs in the course of further fighting near Brest. After recovering, at the turn of October and November 1939, he came into contact with the underground structure of the White Eagle Organisation operating in Cracow, which was later incorporated into the structures of the Union for Armed Struggle (Związek Walki Zbrojnej). K. Gucwa was appointed to organise a network of couriers and courier routes from the territory of the Sadecczyzna region through Slovakia to Budapest.

On 18 March 1941, during a course to Budapest on the Slovak-Hungarian border, Klemens Gucwa, pseud. "Góral", was shot by a Slovak border guard. As a result of his wounds, he died the next day in hospital in Košice and was buried in the local cemetery under a changed name. K. Gucwa was posthumously awarded the Order of Virtuti Militari and promoted to the rank of captain.

The grave is located on plot XXI, among the Slovak graves, close to the entrance from Užhorodská Street. At the beginning of the 1970s, a tombstone was erected on it with a plaque on which the real name of the "Highlander" was engraved. Unfortunately, over time, K. Gucwa's burial place was forgotten. It was not until 2014 that the grave was found again by Sandecja Nowy Sącz fans. Through the efforts of the Sandecja Supporters Association together with the Gucwa family and with the help of the Polish embassy in Bratislava, the gravestone was redecorated. The grave has the shape of a fairly typical granite tombstone. The following inscription is engraved on the plaque: "THE LATE KLEMENS KONSTANTY GUCWA / "GÓRAL" / * 23.XII.1909R. +18.III.1941R. / CAPTAIN OF THE POLISH ARMY / DECORATED WITH THE VIRTUTI MILITARI CROSS / COURIER OF UNDERGROUND POLAND / ON THE WARSAW-BUDAPEST LINE". The grave also bears a smaller plaque which reads in Polish and Slovak: "KLEMENS KONSTANTY / GUCWA / "GÓRAL" / 1909-1941 / COURIER / OF THE POLISH UNDERGROUND STATE / SHOT DEAD NEAR KOŠICE / BY A SLOVAK BORDER GUARD / IN HONOUR OF HIS MEMORY".
