Berdyczov cemetery

Berdyczów | Ukraine

The "old" cemetery in Berdyczów is located in the city centre on Pushkin Street. It occupies an area of about 10 hectares. It was founded in the first half of the 19th century, officially closed in 1973 https://slowopolskie.online/polski-cmentarz-w-berdyczowie/ . It is fenced from the south and west. In the cemetery, in addition to Polish Catholic gravestones, there are Orthodox, Ukrainian and occasionally gravestones of other nationalities. During his two visits, Zbigniew Hauser found a total of around 40 tombstones with Polish inscriptions. These include an exceptionally impressive monument in the shape of a black marble column on a pedestal topped by an angel, where members of the Paciorkowski family who died in the early 20th century were buried. Other impressive monuments include the black marble obelisk of Kazimierz Trzeciak (died 1888), the gravestone of Maria Tyszka (died 1914) surrounded by plinths, the black marble plinth cross of Marek and Teofila Zabłocki from the beginning of the 20th century and the gravestone in the form of a knotted cross on rocks of parish priest Edmund Bernatowicz (died 1893). A stone barrow with a bronze marble inscription plaque of Erazm Zwierzchowski, who died in 1889, also attracts attention. During clean-up work in 2016, a monument to Eustachy Bibersztein-Kazimierski (d. 1863), Marshal of the Berdycz district, was found. The monument was found in three parts, which have since been merged https://slowopolskie.online/w-berdyczowie-odnaleziono-unikalny-pochowek-marszaka-szlachty-berdyczowskiej/ .

The cemetery was visited several times within the framework of the Studio Wschód Foundation's campaign "Mogila pradziada ocal od zapomnienia" in 2013-2018. The necropolis occupies a vast area, which was densely overgrown. During the clean-up work, more tombstones were discovered. Basic restoration work was also carried out. Metal crosses and fences were repainted, inscriptions were refreshed https://kuriergalicyjski.com/modzi-patrioci-z-jawora-zadbali-o-polski-cmentarz-w-berdyczowie/ ; http://studiowschod.org.pl/berdyczow2016.htm . In 2017, the Avenue of Remembrance, i.e. the main cemetery avenue, was realised from the civic budget https://kuriergalicyjski.com/na-polskim-cmentarzu-w-berdyczowie-powstala-aleja-pamieci/ .

There are three epitaph plates in the Carmelite church in Berdyczów, including one founded by Countess Maria Tyszkiewicz in 1882 to members of the Tyszkiewicz and Radziwiłł families.
