Biography:

Roman Ludwik Wajda (1901-1974) - Polish engineer, lieutenant colonel of sappers in the Polish Army, lecturer and Polish activist in Great Britain. In 1931, after his marriage, he moved to Sanok, where he took up the post of Head of the Technical Department in the town hall. His cooperation with the town mayor, Jan Rajchl, towards the expansion and beautification of the town resulted in the renovation of the market square and town hall, the revitalisation of the municipal grounds, the construction of the Municipal Savings Bank in 1935-1937, the development of Mickiewicza Street and plans for the regulation of the left bank of the San River. In exile, Roman Wajda taught at the Polish University College and the Battersea College of Technology at the University of London. In 1958-1960, he served as President of the Association of Polish Technicians in Great Britain. He was a member and chairman of the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Department of the Polish Scientific Society Abroad. He headed the Polish Social and Cultural Centre (POSK) in London, which had been in operation since 1964. He was also the initiator and main proponent of the construction of the new POSK building in Hammersmith, opened in 1974.
