Biography:

Adam Prażmowski (1821-1885), born in Warsaw, son of Józef Prażmowski and Teresa Gaszyńska. In 1839 he began working at the Warsaw Observatory as an assistant. At that time he discovered the polarisation of light emitted by the solar corona. He wrote many scientific articles for the journal Biblioteka Warszawska. Between 1846 and 1849 he took part in topographical surveys of Poland under the direction of the Russian surveyor Carl Tenner. From 1863 he worked in exile in Paris. He carried out many studies of great scientific importance. He was the most outstanding Polish astronomer of the 19th century. He died in Paris.
