St Nicholas Church, Kiev, Vladislav Horodetsky and S. Volovskiy

The church is located in Kiev. Krasnoarmskaya Street (formerly Bolshaya Vasilkovskaya).

The Church of St. Nicholas is of basilica layout with a transept, brick, of reinforced concrete construction, with two towers in the façade. It was built in the medieval Gothic style, with stained-glass windows and sculptures decorating the façade. In 1936, however, the communist authorities closed it down, turning it into outbuildings. Damaged during the Second World War, it was turned into a regional (provincial) archive after the damage was repaired. Erected in 1907, the church's neo-Gothic exterior is one of the most beautiful and impressive buildings in the centre of Kyiv - thanks to its two graceful 60-metre high towers, the large rosette in the centre of the façade, the stained glass windows and the yellow and red bricks used for the perimeter walls. During Soviet times, the church was turned into an organ music house; after 1992, it was restored for worship purposes.

In 1970, the musician and founder of the Ukrainian Organ School Arseniy Kotlarevsky took an interest in it, especially the wonderful acoustics of the interior. And he "brought up" with the authorities the transformation of the temple into a concert hall - the Republican House of Organ and Chamber Music. Especially for it, the then Czechoslovak company Rieger-Kloss built an organ with 3846 pipes made of precious wood and metal.
