Biography:

Zygmunt Gorgolewski (1845-1903 - Polish architect, representative of historicism. Between 1866 and 1871 he studied architecture at the Royal Academy of Building in Berlin. After completing this stage of his education, he worked for six years as an assistant professor at the academy. He then went on to take up various posts: councillor at the Ministry of Public Works from 1877, architect of the royal palaces in Berlin and royal building inspector in Halle from 1885. In 1891 he began working in Hildesheim. During his career he twice took part in competitions for the design of the Reichstag seat . The first competition took place in 1872, where, out of 105 entries, his work, along with those of 19 other participants, was shortlisted. In the second competition, held ten years later, he was awarded fourth prize. In addition, he won first prize for his design of the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge. During his studies, he also supervised the construction of the Hanover station in Berlin. Later, he was involved in planning the redevelopment of the royal palaces in Berlin and Kiel. He also worked on the expansion of government offices in the capital and on university clinics in Halle (Saale) and Bonn. His projects also included plans for a bathing establishment in Bad Oeynhausen in Westphalia. In addition, he was responsible for the design of court buildings in Opole and Olsztyn, as well as the design of prisons in Świdnica and Królewska Huta (now Chorzów). In the so-called Poznań region, he was involved, among other things, in the restoration of the church in Września, the castle in Gołuchów and the library in Kórnik, as well as the construction of the Twardowski palace in Kobylniki. He travelled around Kraków, Lviv, Kiev, Vilnius, Paris, Italy, Germany and Austria. In 1875 he participated in a competition for the building of the Galician Sejm in Lwów, which after World War I became the seat of Jan Kazimierz University. Although the project presented by him was considered the most excellent by the press and experts, unfortunately it did not reach the stage of realisation. Later, Gorgolewski sat on the competition jury several times, which influenced the design and author of the Kraków theatre (1889), the savings bank in Chernivtsi and the St. Elizabeth Church in Lviv. In 1896, he was victorious in the competition for the new building of the Municipal Theatre in Lviv, defeating the creator of the Krakow theatre, Jerzy Feintuch-Zawiejski.
