Monument to Polish Soldiers in Lommel

The forgotten work of the eminent sculptor, rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, is interesting both for artistic and historical reasons (the most important monumental realisation on the trail of General Maczek's army), as well as for political reasons (the fruit of a short-lived collaboration between the communist authorities and the administration of the West Country and the Belgian Polish community after the 'thaw' of 1956).

The monument stands in a forest cemetery near the village of Lommel and is the largest commemorative installation dedicated to the soldiers of General Maczek's division. It contains the graves of 257 Polish soldiers. Initially, the cemetery was laid out in a regular pattern (1946-1947): several groups of white crosses arranged on both sides of the main axis-alea. At its end, three stone walls in a horseshoe arrangement, crowned axially by a large cross 6.5 m high (only erected in 1990). In front of them is a smaller wall and a slightly off-axis figure chiseled by Wnuk. The simplified, compact figure of a woman with a laurel wreath develops the concept of the sculpture 'Motherhood', which Wnuk made in 1957 (now the Park in Gdańsk-Oliwa); as a whole, it acquires a monumental expression of a meaningful sign, a symbol of heroism. The work was created during the period of the 'thaw', commissioned by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is the only foreign realisation of the eminent sculptor, author of, among others, the famous Gratitude Monuments in Gdynia and Włocławek, as well as the poignant group "To the Women of the Times of Occupation". Wnuk's oeuvre already marks a clear departure from the poetics of socialist realism towards expressive deformation and textural experimentation.

On the wall behind the statue are inscriptions in Polish, French and Flemish, "For Our and Your Freedom" and the names of places from the combat trail of the fallen.
