Tombstone of Cardinal Włodzimierz Czacki in the church of Santa Pudenziana in Rome

Placed on the right side of the nave, against the wall, it is the largest work of sculpture in the austere interior of the early Christian basilica, which was the titular church of Cardinal Czacki (1834-1888). The reclining figure of the deceased, with portrait-like features, has been given a rich setting in the tombstone with elements imitating Gothic and early Renaissance.

Settled in Rome from 1851, the grandson of the famous Tadeusz Czacki, he became secretary and adviser to Pope Pius IX, then to Leo XIII, and finally nuncio in Paris. He was an eminent publicist and a highly respected diplomat. He also wrote poetry under the influence of his friend, Zygmunt Krasiński. The tombstone was funded by the cardinal's family. This work is one of the most impressive from the still poorly known Roman period of Weloński, who settled there in 1880 until 1898, when he returned to Warsaw. He was a typical representative of academism in European sculpture of the 19th century. He combined his excellent technique with inspiration from Renaissance art (which is best seen in his numerous tombstones, e.g. in Płock, at Wawel Castle). "The artist alluded to the tumbling monuments of the Middle Ages, which is evidenced by the Gothic niche in the background and the figure of a cardinal resting on a tumulus with expressive facial features and hands placed on his chest. The medallion with the Madonna in the background alludes to Renaissance tondos" (T. Chrzanowski, M. Kornecki).

Weloński took up the idea of a tumulus with a recumbent figure a dozen or so years later in another of his well-known tombstones, that of Cardinal Jerzy Radziwiłł in Wawel Cathedral. The immediate inspiration for the entire composition was Leonardo Bruni's tombstone from the Florentine church of Santa Croce, a masterpiece by Bernardo Rossellino (1445-1450). The artist deftly combined native, Gothic associations with Italian Renaissance associations. The rich heraldic programme and inscriptions allude to Czacki's international activities and include references to the deceased's Polish-Lithuanian origins and his service to the papacy. The bronze casting was made by the famous Roman giselle Alessandro Nelli, with whom Weloński collaborated (it made, among other things, a cast of his famous 'Gladiator'), as did other Polish sculptors. A replica of the tondo is in the crypt of the Resurrectionist Church in Rome.
