Biography:

Paweł Ksawery Brzostowski (1739-1827), born in Rukojnie, son of Józef, Polish Roman Catholic clergyman, publicist and translator. A canon of Vilnius from 1755 to 1773, he studied theology in Rome from 1758 to 1762. In 1762 he was appointed Grand Writer of Lithuania. In 1767 he acquired the village of Merecz near Vilnius in the area of which he founded a peasant state, the Pavlovian Commonwealth. From 1774 to 1787 he was Grand Referendary of Lithuania.
