Biography:

Zygmunt Hertz (1908-1979), born in Warsaw, son of Mieczysław and Maria Maybaum. In 1926 he matriculated at the Merchants' Congregational School in Lodz. He then studied economics for a year at Owens College in Manchester, UK. On his return, he served at the Artillery Reserve Cadet School in Włodzimierz Wołyński and the Anti-aircraft Artillery Training Centre in Warsaw. In 1933, he became a second lieutenant. In 1939, he married Zofia Neuding. In 1940, he (and his wife) were arrested by the NKVD. They worked for fourteen months clearing the forest in the village of Tsinglok. In 1941, he and his wife joined the Polish Army. Together with his wife, Jerzy Giedroyc and Józef Czapski, they founded the Literary Institute. This place became one of the most important centres for Polish émigré authors and publicists, as well as for authors who had been censored in communist Poland and Central and Eastern Europe. The Institute published the magazine Kultura, a series entitled Biblioteka Kultury.
