Biography:

Antoni Popiel (1865-1910), born in Szczakowa, sculptor, professor. Between 1882 and 1884, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków under Izydor Jabłoński, Władysław Łuszczkiewicz and Walery Gadomski. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1885 to 1888. In 1888 he moved to Lviv, where he became an assistant to Leonard Marconi in the department of drawing and modelling at the Lviv Polytechnic. In 1898 he won the competition for the Adam Mickiewicz monument in Lviv, the monument was unveiled in 1904. In 1907, he took second place in the competition for the statue of Tadeusz Kościuszko in Washington, D.C., but President Theodor Roosevelt decided that this project would be realised. Because of his departure, he resigned as head of the chair of sculpture and ornamentation at the Lviv Polytechnic.
