French engraver, painter and art theorist, member and lecturer of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Born into the family of a German-born tailor, he apprenticed from 1620 with the engraver Melchior Tavernier. In 1628 he met Jacques Callot and came under his influence.
