In Kowel, 3 burial sites of soldiers from the First World War have been preserved. The largest concentration of these graves is the "Na Górce" cemetery, established in 1915 by the command of the Austro-Hungarian army. 1,820 German and Austrian soldiers were buried there, as well as 300 Polish legionaries who fought alongside the Austrian army during the First World War. Only the burials of legionaries have survived to the present day. The cemetery is located on a hill in the northern part of Kowel, about 5 km from the city centre in the direction of Kamień Koszyski. Its southern part is occupied by the Orthodox cemetery of the village of Werbka. The northern and eastern sides of the cemetery are surrounded by former sand pits and have the appearance of a sandy scarp with very steep slopes, 7-9 m high. The burials of Polish legionaries are located in the western part of the cemetery. On the typical earthen graves, surrounded by concrete curbs, stand concrete crosses, currently unnamed. The dominant feature of the section is a massive concrete stele - a monument with a bas-relief of a reclining lion. In 2012, scouts from the Zgierz Scouting and Guiding Association (ZHP) took care of the plot and carried out the necessary renovation work. In the following years, it was under the permanent care of the scouts. Since 2017, this care has been financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage under the Minister's Programme "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad".
