In September 2023, we began conservation work on three chapels topped with figures of saints, located at the entrance to a former manor house in the village of Holoby in Volyn, Ukraine.

The roadside chapels were built in 1711 with the foundation of Józef Jaruzelski. The central chapel is topped by a partially destroyed statue of the Virgin Mary. The base is a square-shaped brick and plaster pedestal of simple form. On each of the four walls of the pedestal are shallow rectangular niches. The massive pedestal is covered with a high, hipped, S-shaped tile roof on which a brick and plaster column is built, topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The statues of St Anthony and St John of Nepomuk standing at the sides are supported on brick and plaster pedestals with corners in the form of pilasters stylised as smoothly worked out stretched snails. The pedestals are covered with hipped S-shaped roofs. All sculptures are made of limestone.

The shrines need urgent restoration work. The pedestals have damaged plasterwork and some of the bricks, and one cochlea is missing. The statue of the Virgin Mary is dismembered, its fragments lying on the ground next to the pedestal. The surface of all sculptures is covered with harmful biological and atmospheric build-up, which accelerates the erosion process. There is severe loss of tile, resulting in deterioration of the pedestals.

Anticipated completion date of the project: September 2024.

Work on the shrines was started by the company ZKR sp. z o.o. under the direction of Paweł Jędrzejczyk, selected by open tender.

Work carried out in 2023 as part of the Polonica Institute's strategic programme "Protection of Polish cultural heritage abroad"
