Biography:

Marie-Antoinette Lix (1839-1909), participant in the January Uprising and the Franco-Prussian War, governess. Born in Colmar on the Franco-German border. Raised by her father, who taught her horse riding, sabre wielding, and shooting. In 1856 or 1857, she left for Poland to work as a governess with the Łubieńskis. During the January Rising, she cared for the wounded and acted as a courier (in male disguise under the pseudonym Michel le Sombre). During the Franco-Prussian War, again in male disguise, she took part in the defence of Lamarche and Langres as a lieutenant of snipers, particularly distinguishing herself during the Battle of Nompatelize (6 October 1870).
