Clean-up work at the Polish cemetery in Krakovets, Ukraine

Information about the object:
The Catholic cemetery in Krakowec was probably founded around the middle of the 19th century. It occupies an area of approximately 2.5 hectares. The oldest gravestones in the cemetery are connected with the name of the owners - the Potocki family (in Krakowec until 1848). The last landowners - the Łubieńskis - built a burial chapel here. Among the well-known persons, the tombstone of the painter - Tomasz Antoni Lisiewicz (d. 1930) was inventoried. Also noteworthy are the figural tombstones (Madonnas), as well as a large collection of unique sculptures from the Brusno school, of various forms. It has been very neglected because the small Polish community living in Krakowiec does not have enough resources to surround the necropolis with proper care.

Completed works:

2019
In addition to cleaning work, the cemetery was cleared of shrubs and self-sown trees that regularly damage the remains of gravestones. Metal parts of crosses, gravestones and fences were cleaned. The remains of damaged gravestones were collected and a Lapidarium was created. Documentation of the work carried out was produced, which was used to publish an 8-page brochure providing basic information about the site and the type and scope of the work carried out. The project culminated in an exhibition of photographs documenting the work, which was presented on 26 October in Piwniczna (Poland). Afterwards, the exhibition was taken to Yavoriv near Krakovec (Ukraine), as good cooperation with the town authorities was established there.

2023
The project was a continuation of the cleaning work at the Polish cemetery in Krakowec, Ukraine, which the beneficiary had already started in 2019. There is a very small Catholic minority living in the area and they are already elderly, so the local cemetery was very neglected. The cemetery was cleared of weeds and bushes that regularly damaged the gravestones. Documentation was made of the objects that needed professional maintenance.

A large part of the gravestones was overgrown by moss and fungi. It was also advisable to preserve the relics of the gravestones - e.g. by depositing them in a lapidarium created for this purpose. The fence of the necropolis also deserved to be repaired, as it consisted of a partially destroyed mesh and a gate.
