Publication of catalogue of Polish sculpture from the 19th and first half of the 20th century from the collection of the Lviv National Art Gallery

Information about the object:
The entire collection of Polish sculpture in this collection amounts to approximately one thousand objects. The task concerned its part, i.e., works by Polish artists and those connected with Poland from the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.

The collection is comprised of works by several dozen Polish sculptors connected with Lviv by origin or residence. The collection also includes sculptures made by Polish artists, but with no specific attribution, as well as several works by sculptors of other nationalities, whose subject matter is related to Poland. It includes examples of the work of almost all prominent Polish artists working in the 19th and first half of the 20th century, such as Xawery Dunikowski, Jakub Tatarkiewicz, Władysław Oleszczyński, Cyprian Godebski, Marceli Guyski, Teodor Rygier, Antoni Madeyski and Wacław Szymanowski. Particularly noteworthy are large groups of works by two artists born and deceased in Lwów - Tadeusz Barącz and Luna Amalia Drexlerówna, as well as those connected with Lwów - Antoni Popieli and Kazimiera Pajzderska. The collection's subject matter includes individual statues and sculptural groups, as well as portrait busts and heads of historical and contemporary personages, as well as compositions that are models for monuments and works on genre themes. A variety of materials have been used to create them, mostly plaster, but also bronze, marble, alabaster, terracotta and wood, using various sculpting techniques. The collection includes full-plastic sculptures and reliefs, compositions cast in bronze and casts in plaster. The collection forms an ensemble of great significance for the history of Polish sculpture.

Completed works:
The project aimed to publish the scientific material that resulted from the inventory work carried out in 2017 in the collection of the Lviv National Art Gallery.

As a result of the inventory work carried out in 2017, the collection was photographed and 231 catalogue entries were compiled, containing information on the object's title (subject matter), author and time of creation, material and manufacturing technique, dimensions, signature, inscriptions (stickers) and the object's origin. In 2018, the catalogue entries were scientifically edited and the photographs illustrating the sculpture collection were technically corrected. As a result of the activities carried out, material was prepared for publication that will supplement the state of knowledge of the Polish artistic legacy remaining abroad. A great value of the catalogue is the full photographic documentation of the presented objects. It should be emphasised that many of the sculptures will be published for the first time.

The publication has been distributed to libraries, universities and research centres in Poland and Ukraine. It will also be made available free of charge to anyone interested. If you are interested in receiving the publication, please contact us by e-mail - biuro@okp.krakow.pl.
