Information about the object:
The historic monastery complex of the Order of Discalced Carmelites in Berdyczów was founded in 1630 on the site of the former fortress of the Tyszkiewicz family and was called the Fortress of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For centuries it was one of the most important places of religious worship, as well as a centre of learning and culture in the Ukrainian lands. It played a special political and military role between the 17th and 18th centuries. The turbulent history of the region forced the monks there to leave the monastery four times - and to return four times. In 2011. The Catholic Church declared it a national shrine of Ukraine.

The complex of monastery buildings including the fortification walls in Berdyczów, Ukraine, was built in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 2012, the renovation of the church was completed. In 2014, a preliminary structural appraisal was carried out by Dr Roman Paruch (Building Expert and Expert of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage), determining the technical condition. The condition of a significant part of the monastery walls was assessed as catastrophic, requiring the initiation of immediate structural and conservation work of a rescue nature. In March 2015, part of the wall of the so-called northern tower collapsed, which was a telling confirmation of the opinion expressed in the expert report. Between 2015 and 2017, the north tower was renovated along with a section of the eastern wall. Between 2018 and 2020, a section of the north wall was renovated along a direct 30-metre section located at the north tower, both on the exterior side (from the main street) and on the side of the monastery courtyard. In 2021, the works included the eastern section. In November 2021, in preparation for the restoration of the frontal (southern) section of the walls, an expert opinion and structural and construction survey was carried out to determine the technical condition of the Berdyczov Monastery walls - southern section. The fortified walls on the southern side were 75% made of ceramic elements - solid bricks, with only small fragments in several sections preserved in stone. The restoration of the first part of the frontal (southern) section of the fortified walls in Berdyczów was launched in 2022.

Completed works:

2020 (stage V)
The works carried out as part of the project concerned the restoration of the most endangered section of the 30m-long northern wall, adjacent to the so-called northern tower.

Renovation was also carried out on the existing brick and stone wall along with buttresses. The wall was reinforced with a reinforced concrete ring beam.

2021 (Phase VI)
The works carried out as part of the project concerned the restoration of a section of the eastern wall with a length of 73.6 m and an area of 431 sq m, extending from the northern tower to the eastern tower. The scope of work is of a rescue and conservation nature. As part of the task, a thorough restoration of the existing brick and stone wall on the exterior side of the former Berdycz fortress was carried out.

2022 (Stage VII)
Stage VII - a section of the southern walls realised by the KRAKOW PROVINCE OF THE BOSY CARMELITES CONVENTRY concerns the renovation and revalorisation of another section of the southern part of the wall surrounding the Carmelite Monastery in Berdyczów founded by Janusz Tyszkiewicz. In this stage, subsidised at PLN 348,080, work was carried out on a 707.22 m2 section stretching from the section by the eastern tower to the end of the eastern tower on the side of the main fortress gate. The scope of the work was restoration and conservation work and consisted of a thorough renovation of the existing brick and stone wall mainly on the exterior side of the former Berdycz fortress.

2023 (Phase VIII)
The next stage of the project consisted of the restoration and revalorisation of a 218.85 m2 section of the southern wall extending from the southern tower to the main gate (section 6) and from the main gate to the corner of the second southern tower (section 8). The task involved extensive restoration of the existing brick and stone wall. All conservation and construction work took into account the historic character of the Berdyczov monastery complex.
