Construction and conservation project for the renovation of the façade and protection of the frescoes of St Anne's Church in Ssiadovice, Ukraine

Information about the object:
The origins of the Neighbours parish go back to 1589 and are connected with the legend that a local farmer ploughed a bas-relief of St. Anne of Samothrace out of the ground. It was a gilded bas-relief depicting St Anne Samothée and the infant Jesus. In 1946, the bas-relief was taken to the Carmelite monastery in 'Piasek' in Kraków. The farmer took his find to the Herburts, the landowners, who built a wooden chapel for the bas-relief that year, followed by a brick church in 1591.

On 23 July 1603 the Carmelites from Krakow arrived in Ssiadowice. They took custody of the church of St. Anne and the grace-filled statue. In 1613, a defensive wall with four towers was added to the church and monastery, one of which now serves as a bell tower.

The Carmelites stayed in Sąsiadowice until 1946, when they were forced by the Soviet authorities to leave the church and monastery. The buildings were turned into a non-commissioned officer's school and then into a fertiliser warehouse. The Roman Catholic community regained the buildings in 1989 and immediately set about rebuilding them. However, on 3 February 2010, the roof of the church caught fire, but was immediately rebuilt. In 2011, the Carmelites returned to Sąsiadowice and in 2013 a copy of the bas-relief of St Anne of Samothrace returned. On 24 July 2016, the church was reverified to become the shrine of St Anne of Samothrace.

The church's furnishings were baroque. There are eight altars, including St John the Baptist, Christ Crucified and St Anthony. The nave is adorned with an altar with a bas-relief of St Anne Samotrzeć, behind which is the monastic choir, which has its own altar.

Completed works:
The task was to carry out a construction and conservation project for the façade of St Anne's Church in Sąsiadowice, together with a conservation project for the walls, ceiling and columns of the polychrome of the eastern chapel.

The project was carried out by specialists in the fields of building (architecture and construction), conservation and historians. A construction and conservation project for the temple was carried out, together with detailed conservation work programmes. This was possible thanks to a phased survey and drawing inventory, historical research, conservation studies and the development of a structural expertise, an architectural and conservation conceptual design and a construction project for both the historic substance of the church and the elements of its architectural and painting decoration.
