Information about the object:
The wooden canonical stalls, which are located on both sides of the presbytery of the Lviv Cathedral, were made by carpenters from Obroshyn between 1769 and 1770, according to the design of Piotr Polejowski. Composed together with the two portals to the sacristy, they are painted black and have gilded carvings and decorative elements such as bas-reliefs of the Apostles, insignia of the clergy, Arma Pasionis and floral motifs.

2021 (stage I)
The task concerns the 18th century canonical stalls located on both sides of the presbytery of the Metropolitan Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lviv. This is the first stage of conservation work of a rescue nature, due to the poor state of preservation of the wooden stalls. Based on the diagnosis of the object's condition, a comprehensive programme of conservation work will be developed in the field of technical and aesthetic measures for the historic stalls.

The main objective of the proposed task is a comprehensive diagnosis of the condition of the historic object and rescue work to stop its deterioration. The first stage of the project involves dismantling the stalls located on the left side of the chancel. These will serve as the subject of non-invasive research and findings for further conservation measures. During the examination of the object, problems hitherto undiagnosed are to be expected, which may become exposed in the parts of the masonry and plastering behind the dismantled stalls. For example, wall polychromes may be uncovered or the need for unforeseen conservation interventions may arise. The result of the task will be the recognition of the conservation status of the canonical stalls and the development of a comprehensive conservation programme for further technical and aesthetic measures.

2022 (stage II)
We have completed conservation work on early Baroque canonical stalls located in the presbytery of the Metropolitan Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lviv.

The second stage of the project involved the restoration of the left wing of the stalls in order to restore the proper technical parameters of the object:

1. Carrying out expanding excavations to determine the degree of preservation and identify the original original layers.

2. structural reinforcement of the technological layers to the wooden substrate.

3. Introduction of mould and fungicide preparations and strengthening of the wood structure.

4. gluing of cracked panels.

5. filling of defects in the wood substance by inserting seasoned wood splints of the same parameters as the original.

6. reinforcement of the stall structure and replacement of damaged structural elements on the back of the stall.

7. repairing, plumbing and stabilising the floor.

The task was one of the elements of multidirectional conservation work carried out for years in the Lviv Cathedral, aimed at securing the historic furnishings of this valuable object of Polish culture abroad.

2023 (stage III)
The project was of a conservation nature and consisted of work on early Baroque canonical stalls located in the presbytery of the Metropolitan Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lviv. The third stage of work involved continuing work on the architectural structure of the left wing of the stalls. The task was one of the elements of the comprehensive and multidirectional conservation work carried out for years at the Lviv Cathedral, aimed at safeguarding the historic furnishings of this valuable object of Polish culture abroad.
