Information about the object:
...The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Lutsk is one of the two - along with the castle - most valuable buildings in Lutsk. The church was built near the entrance gate of the castle, on the site of one of its towers.

The Jesuit Order appeared in Lutsk in the early 17th century. King Sigismund III Vasa and the bishops Marcin Szyszkowski and Paweł Wołucki contributed to the foundation of the church and the college. In 1616, the foundation stone was laid; the designs came from the hand of M. Hintz. A fire broke out in 1724, severely damaging the church and the college. By 1730 the Jesuit buildings had undergone extensive renovation with the participation of the Jesuit architect Paweł Giżycki. In order to preserve the walls, which had been weakened by the fire, they were enclosed with galleries and a porch with a choir, and two towers were added to flank the façade. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773, the church was handed over to the Commission of National Education and the college was closed down. After World War II and the incorporation of Lutsk into the Ukrainian SSR, the Soviet authorities prevented the church from functioning; in 1981, a museum of atheism was set up in the church, which caused considerable damage to the furnishings and interior of the church. After the collapse of the USSR, the church resumed its activities, but the lack of repair and conservation efforts contributed to further degradation of the building.

Completed works:

2022
The aim of the task was to develop design documentation for the conservation renovation of the building.

The works covered both the façade and the interior, including the two-storey basement. The basis for the implementation was the inventory made by laser scanning in the previous phase and the structural and building expertise prepared in 2018 on behalf of the Polonika Institute.

2023
The project is the next, third stage of work on the Cathedral of Saints Apostles Peter and Paul in Lutsk in Ukrainian Volyn. The current stage was preparatory in nature. During it, project documentation was developed for renovation and conservation work on the building. These documents will be used to conduct further renovation and conservation activities in subsequent stages of the project. In addition, they will allow a timetable to be set for subsequent execution work (subsequent stages of the task). It will also form an important annex to international programmes from which the remainder of the work on the cathedral can be financed.

Funding: Programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad".
