Research work at St Joseph's Church on the Kahlenberg in Vienna

Information about the object:
From Kahlenberg Hill - today part of Vienna - John III Sobieski commanded a victorious battle against the Turkish army in 1683. The church with the Camaldolese monastery was built at the beginning of the 17th century on the initiative and with funds of Crown Marshal Mikolaj Wolski. The church and the monastery were destroyed by the Turkish and Napoleonic armies. Almost all the monastery buildings were demolished. The present form of the church was given in 1912 during the reconstruction led by the Resurrectionist priests.

Completed works:

2022
The task consisted of carrying out measurement and expert studies of St Joseph's Church and Monastery on the Kahlenberg in Vienna.

These studies form the basis for the planned construction and restoration project.

An inventory of the church with the monastery section, as well as mycological and structural analyses were carried out. In addition, an archive search was carried out, which was necessary in order to obtain permission from the Viennese conservator to carry out restoration and conservation work.

2023
This year's project phase consisted of research and studies (research phase) and the development of a detailed conservation and restoration project (design phase) for the façade and interior of St. Joseph's Church and Monastery on the Kahlenberg in Vienna. The research provided detailed knowledge of the structure and construction of the church, as well as the original material and aesthetic solutions. On this basis, conclusions and guidelines were formulated in the detailed design, which in subsequent stages will allow all the relevant permits to be obtained and a series of renovation, conservation and restoration works to be carried out.

The scope of the task includes the facades and interiors of the church (nave, presbytery, crypt, narthex, sacristy and tower) and the interiors of the monastery part together with the architectural decoration. Conservation research was carried out, including stratigraphic excavations on the exterior and interior walls of the church, the aim of which will be to establish the chronology and the primary and secondary colours. At the same time, samples were taken for laboratory tests to determine the types of materials used and their colouring. In parallel, architectural research was carried out to identify the construction phases of the church and secondary changes to its spatial layout, tectonics or decoration. The monastery rooms were used to obtain comparative material and to verify the findings from the stratigraphic excavations in the church section. The culmination of the task was the incorporation of all of the above research, and the results of the work at the previous stage, into the form of a detailed design and conservation work programme to be agreed in order to obtain the necessary formal permissions to carry out the work.
