Information about the object:
Lychakiv cemetery is the oldest necropolis in Lviv. Founded in the eastern part of the city in 1786, it is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. It is distinguished by its high-class gravestones. Since 2018, the Polonika Institute has been involved in the conservation work of some of the tombstones.

The Daughters of Charity occupy an important place in the history of Lviv, where they have provided assistance to the sick and the poor since the beginning of the order in 1799.

The Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent a Paulo (the so-called Grey Nuns) dedicated themselves to the poor of Lviv for decades: in hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, schools in caring for the needy.

Completed works:
The project included the conservation, restoration and conservation work on the statue of the Mother of God, commemorating the entire cemetery that once existed on this site, where about fifty Grey Nuns are buried.

The aim of the work was primarily to restore the historical and symbolic values of the burial site, on whose site modern graves have been created. Of the entire plot, only these two objects have survived to this day: in the second grave, representatives of the Grey Nuns' order are buried.

The conservation work restored the artistic values and stopped the effects of the destructive processes that had taken place on the surface and in the structure of the objects as a result of adverse weather conditions. A new foundation was made, the stone elements comprising the tombstone were cleaned, and the inscriptions were completed and authenticated.

Funding: Programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad".
