Plaque in memory of Prof. Marian Szyjkowski for the 100th anniversary of Polish Studies in Prague

Information about the facility:
Professor Marian Szyjkowski (1883-1952) was one of the most famous Polish scholars who promoted Polish culture abroad. Born in Lviv, Professor Szyjkowski became known as an outstanding and significant figure in the history of Polish literature, as a theatre scholar (initiator of the Bagatela theatre studio) and as a researcher into Polish-Czech literary relations.

After working at the Jagiellonian University, in 1923 he was employed at the Charles University in Prague. There, he took up the established Chair of Polish Language and Literature. In the course of his lecturing activities, his main subject was Romanticism (he especially promoted the works of Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki and Zygmunt Krasiński), as well as Poland's participation in the Czech national revival and Polish-Czech cultural relations. Thanks to M. Szyjkowski, a Polish language book collection was also established at the University of Prague. The year 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the first foreign Polish Studies Department.
