Repair work on the historic tower of the "Heart of Jesus" church in Chernivtsi - emergency condition (Ukraine)

Information about the object:
The church was designed by the director of the Chernivtsi Industrial School, Professor Leitzner; it is considered to be his best work; he also supervised the construction. The foundation stone was laid in June 1891 and the church was consecrated in 1891, with the finishing work continuing for several years. Funds for the construction were raised by local worshippers, high officials and also the faithful from all over Europe. The stained-glass windows were brought from Poland, the organ from the Rieger factory in Germany, the bells from Edinburgh; the polychrome was made by the artist Kasza from Mikołów, the main altar and the pulpits by the Tyrolean Schtufleser. The furnishings were almost completely destroyed when the building was converted into an archive in 1963.

The Roman Catholic community recovered the church in 2010. Since then, work has been ongoing to restore it to its original form.

One of the underground chapels houses the burials of 60 Polish soldiers killed during the First World War.

Completed works:
This year, it is planned to repair the structure of the tower of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Chernivtsi, including the replacement of damaged parts of the truss and the laying of a new copper sheet covering and the conservation of the crowning cross on the spire. At the same time, a new electrical and lightning protection system will be installed. At present, the wooden rafter framing is heavily damaged in many places and the sheet metal is broken. One of the recent storms tore a sheet of metal off the tower slope. The current condition poses a danger to the building itself, but also to passers-by.

Funding: Programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad".
