International inventory and popularisation of the work of the émigré artist Alicja Halicka (1889-1974)

Information about the object:
Diverse in terms of technique, subject matter and form, the painting and drawing legacy of Alicja Halicka has not yet been the subject of large-scale research of an inventory-catalogue nature. Extremely important from the point of view of the history of twentieth-century art, the history of artistic reception and Polish-French artistic relations, the Polish artist's oeuvre, although present in exhibition and museum discourse, remains an under-researched area. The reason for this is the considerable dispersion of the artist's works. Halicka's paintings and drawings can be found in the most important public museum collections in Europe (e.g. Centre Pompidou in Paris; Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du judaïsme in Paris) and the United States of America (e.g. Museum of Modern Art in New York), as well as in numerous private collections abroad. The concept of the project is to reach out to all of Halicka's works created up to 1945 that are part of public collections, as well as - through already identified collectors, dealers and auction houses that offered (and still offer) the artist's works - to catalogue as many privately owned objects as possible. The anticipated outcome of the project is the compilation of as complete a catalogue as possible of Halicka's works remaining outside Poland. The catalogue will include photographic reproductions of the artist's works, their technical description with information on their state of preservation, dating and a note on the provenance of the work. Structured in this way, the catalogue will provide an overview of Halicka's oeuvre created over several decades before 1945 and will enable further detailed research into the artist's art and life. The publication of the catalogue will coincide with a scholarly symposium and, in subsequent years, a major public presentation of Halicka's works from foreign and domestic collections. The implementation of the project will make it possible to restore the figure and works of Alicja Halicka not only to Polish art history and museology, but also to familiarise the general public and the general Polish public with her work. Another expected long-term effect of the project is to introduce the artist into the international canon of modern art and to draw attention to the unique contribution of the Polish artist's visual art to the world's artistic output of the modernist era.

The results obtained are waiting to be used to organise events popularising the émigré work of this painter and designer.

Completed works:
The project consisted in researching the scattered legacy of Alicja Halicka (1889-1974), a Krakow-born artist with links to the Parisian community. The aim of the project is to compile a catalogue of her paintings and drawings, from 1912 to 1946, held in public and private art collections abroad. The project includes the compilation of an inventory of the artist's works and provenance research.

Funding: Programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad".
