Polish Sports Club Polonia Karviná

The Polish Sports Club Polonia Karviná existed between 1919 and 1952 and was a Czechoslovak sports club for Czech Poles. There were nine sports sections within the club.

It was one of several Polish clubs operating in Zaolzie. In 1922 PKS Polonia Karviná was incorporated into the Polish Association of Sports Clubs in Czechoslovakia. In the 1930s it had more than 4,000 members.

The club achieved several significant sporting successes. In 1921, 1923, 1928 it won the district league, qualifying for the final competition for the Czechoslovak championship.

In the 1930s the club was successful in the Czechoslovak league and was also attached to the Polish league. It took part in international matches. In 1934 it was victorious at the first Polonia Games in Warsaw. World War II put an end to the club's greatness. During it, many members, fans and players were killed. After the war, the club renewed its activities, but functioned for an extremely short time, as it was liquidated by the communist authorities as early as 1952.

The history of PKS Polonia Karviná shows how sport co-created and united the local Polish community. Its memory is still cherished today, as exemplified by a short documentary film made in 2023.
