Commemoration of the residence of Juliusz Słowacki in Vilnius

Vilnius | Lithuania
lit. Vilnius

Juliusz Słowacki lived in Vilnius from 1811. There he attended grammar school and studied law. It was also in Vilnius that he met Adam Mickiewicz through the salon run by his mother. A commemoration of Słowacki is located on Zamkowa Street (Pilies 22). Ferdinand Ruszyc moved to Vilnius in 1908. After a few years, he settled in the tenement house located in the courtyard of house No. 22 on Zamkowa Street. This is where Słowacki lived years before. It was on the painter's initiative that in 1927 a commemorative plaque was built into the wall of the tenement house with the inscription "Juliusz Słowacki lived here". Above the plaque was a bust of the poet on swan wings chiseled by Bolesław Bałzukiewicz to a design by Ruszczyc, and the courtyard was named after Słowacki.
