During World War I, Nadwórna was a battlefield between the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies. The Second Brigade of the Polish Legions under the command of General Józef Haller fought in the vicinity of this town. Nadwórna was occupied several times by Cossack sotnias, but on 24.10.1914. The Second Brigade of the Polish Legions captured Nadwórna.

The next day after this battle, the fallen soldiers were buried in the Nadwórna cemetery. A monument was erected on the grave. This monument survived the period of the USSR and was renovated in the 1990s by a local Polish teacher, Piotr Lewicki. It is a conical obelisk built of small stones on cement mortar. It is crowned by a cast iron cross painted silver. On the front side there is a panel with an inscription plaque which reads: "To the heroes of the Second Iron Brigade, fallen in 1914". The whole is fenced with dangling chains, connected at the corners by concrete posts.

A renovation of this commemoration was carried out in 2020. The work was carried out by the Freedom and Democracy Foundation within the framework of a task co-financed by the programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad".
