In the cemetery next to the Evangelical Church in Hesel there is a war cemetery where 3 Poles from the 1st Armoured Division and 2 Wehrmacht soldiers are buried. The Polish soldiers - Jozef Cimala, Stanislaw Jaworski and Alfons Żeglarski - were part of the 9th Rifle Battalion and fell on 1 May 1945.

The graves of the Polish soldiers bear identical vertical plaques with their first and last names, dates of birth and death, military rank and the badge of the 1st DP. The gravestones of Polish soldiers differ in shape and form from those of German soldiers.
