Collective tomb of the "Exules Poloni Memoriae Suorum" in the Montmartre cemetery in Paris

In the Montmartre cemetery, on the avenue des Polonais, there is a mass tomb customarily called from the inscription at its finial "Exules Poloni Memoriae Suorum" (Polish Exiles to the Memory of Their Own). The tomb, in the form of an ancient temple, consists of a tomb with a Latin cross under a canopy. The baldachin is decorated with acroterions with a bas-relief bipartite coat of arms with an Eagle and Pogo (symbol of a united Poland and Lithuania, i.e. the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) and a figure of an eagle soaring to flight. Inscriptions with the names of the deceased are engraved on the columns. On the front of the tomb, an inscription in Polish reads: "In memory of the dawn of freedom, through the mourning of the nation dawning, the Polish emigration erected this cross on 29 November 1861". The tombstone was erected by Marshal Leon Stempowski to honour Dr Wiktor Ratajski.
