Cemetery in Zlatý Potok

The Golden Creek Cemetery is situated on a hill under the woods located at the eastern end of the town, in a suburb once referred to as 'Jurydyka'. On the opposite side of the access road is the modern cemetery. The necropolis was established in the early 19th century. Around 1905, its area was enlarged by a donation from Piotr Swaryczewski. Eventually, the cemetery has an elongated rectangular plan. On its western side there is the Gniewosz chapel (early 20th century) and the oldest burials. At the same time, this is the area that can be considered the most privileged burial place in the cemetery in Potok Zloty. This section contains the burials of prominent residents of the town from the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. About 120 m east of the Gniewosz chapel stands the Serbeński chapel (1933), around which burials mainly from the 1930s have been found. On the eastern edge of the cemetery, however, there are graves from the 1940s and 1950s, most of which were once marked with wooden crosses. This part of the cemetery served during the Second World War as a shelter for the local population from deportation to Germany, but also from Ukrainian police and bandits. There is still a dugout here today, where Poles took refuge between 1943 and 1944.

History:
Zlatý Potok is one of the most important settlements in the Bučac district. Originally, the settlement, located in a ravine of the river which is a tributary of the Dniester, was called Zahajpole. In 1578, the sons of Mikolaj Potocki (d. 1572) founded a town on its site, named Potok in memory of the place where their family originated. At the beginning of the 17th century. Stefan Potocki erected a castle on a low hill in the southern part of the town. Around ca. 1840, the Olszewski family, building a new palace in the town, drew material from the castle, leading to its eventual ruin. The church was rebuilt after a fire in 1774. At the same time as the Catholic church, a wooden Greek-Catholic church of the Holy Trinity was built. Probably at the beginning of the 18th century, a second Orthodox Church of St Michael was built in Potok Złoty. In 1774, due to the poor condition of both buildings, they were demolished and a single Greek Catholic parish was established in the town at the wooden Holy Trinity Church. During the 1920s, Potok Złoty had the status of a town. The necropolis was established in the early 19th century. Around 1905, its area was enlarged by a donation from Piotr Swaryczewski
